Retreat:  Commissioners in Conversation 
Date and Time:  July 9, 2015 from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm
Location:  Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center, Waterfront Drive, Eureka


I.    Opening Ice Breaker:  Loose Parts
Jennifer Gonzales will introduce Commissioners to materials featured in nature-inspired play settings and art-making programs.                                                                                         

II.   Public Comments and Announcements

III.   Approval of Minutes:  Commission meeting minutes of June 23, 2015.

IV.   Consent Calendar:  The following items were reviewed and recommended for adoption and may be approved by a single vote.  Any member of the public may request the Commission to pull an item for further discussion.   

A.  Humboldt County Office of Education: Developmentally Appropriate Practice for T/K and Pre-K Conference. 
Reference: It is recommended to approve funding in the amount of up to $2,000 to assist with costs of the conference.

B.  Humboldt County Office of Education:  Desired Results Developmental Profile training.
Reference: It is recommended to approve funding in the amount of up to $4,000 to fund slots at no cost for this WestEd training that will be provided locally.

V.   Action Item: ‘Our Time Together: The Playgroup Initiative’
The Commission will consider adoption of the Playgroup Initiative which outlines how playgroups in the county will be strengthened and protected for young children and their families into the future.     (45 minutes)

 VI.  Discussion Item:  Fiscal Management for the Future
The Commission will discuss trends and the management of the Commission’s resources for the future support of key programs serving young children in the county.   
(45 minutes)

VII.  Discussion Item:  ‘Help Me Grow’
The Commission will discuss this emerging model for integrating systems to better serve young children.       
(45 minutes)                                           


 VIII. Discussion Item:  Harm Reduction and Screen Time
The Commission will discuss the potential of a harm reduction model helping with the challenge of screen time and young children.     (30 minutes)

IX.   Discussion Item:  ‘Investing in Infants, Toddlers, and Their Families: An Urgent Need: A Policy Overview from the First 5 Association of California’
The Commission will follow-up on earlier discussions of the policy overview and identify advocacy priorities for each recommendation of this policy paper.    (30 minutes)

X.    Discussion Item:  Collaborative Partnerships & Linkages
The Commission will discuss primary partnerships and potential interests and opportunities for the future.               (30 minutes)


XI.  Closing:  Fiscal Year 2015-2016
Commissioners will discuss their hopes, concerns, and interests for the new fiscal year.
