2015 Results of Survey for Participants in First 5 Humboldt-funded Projects

A total of 431 surveys were collected from parents participating in seventeen First 5 Humboldt Programs in late Fall/early Winter 2015. These programs are: Arcata Tiny Tots, Arcata Playcenter, Betty Chinn Day Center, Blue Lake Family Resource Center, Discovery Museum, FUN Playcenter, Manila Family Resource Center, Mattole Valley Family Resource Center, McKinleyville Family Resource Center, McKinleyville Playgroup, MOPs, Nurse Family Partnership, Orleans Playgroup, Paso a Paso, Rio Dell Playgroup, Southern Humboldt Family Resource Center, and Willow Creek Family Resource Center.

Table A presents the number of surveys collected each year since 2006.The survey response rate for 2015 was 92.7%. The shortage was mainly due to two programs not collecting their expected number of surveys. Although the response rate was less than 100% for 2015, it was a great improvement over the 2014 response rate of 74.2%.

Friday playgroup allows my children (ages 2 and 4 years old) to interact/play with other kids/families sometimes other parents watch my kids which allows me to work 1-2 hours. As a professional working parents (wife and my combined income is very good) can’t work without adequate childcare in Orleans! Are there any childcare services for professional working parents? My children don’t qualify for Head Start. I have to pay cash for private (non-taxable) childcare 3-4 days/week. There is discrimination against working parents based on income levels. We may have to leave Orleans because of this!

In your opinion, how could services/activities here be improved?

Arcata D Street

  • Maybe some programs in the afternoon would be better
  • More days per week
  • I liked when a woman was brought in for new songs for circle time. Maybe local artists could come for entertainment (circle time, etc)
  • To have an afternoon playgroup would be nice sometimes
  • Have a playful theme painted on the walls
  • More stuff for nursing moms (glider, boppy pillow)
  • I don’t know, it’s a great playgroup situation!
  • Offer weekend playtimes?
  • Food choices available, art opportunities available
  • Love the coffee station for parents!
  • To have more activities in the day and for a little longer
  • Story time
  • Would love an afternoon group!

Betty Kwan Chinn Center

  • More flexible on requirements-different versions of parenting class
  • More programs, anger management, etc. Kid counseling
  • Doing a wonderful job for the community

Blue Lake FRC/Playgroup

  • Open more days
  • Not sure how. we love it
  • Bring back the music class! Better snacks for parents. Maybe coffee/tea
  • No complaints J

Discovery Museum

  • Parking can be tricky but we enjoy all inside activities
  • Outside play
  • Love it, maybe expand current location
  • More often, more resources
  • Include music, singing lessons
  • Sing along, circle time at the end of the Tuesday Discovery Playgroup
  • Need a “coin racer” (like at the zoo) at the Discovery Museum. It’s a fun way for us to donate loose change
  • Taking home paperwork so I can explore with my child
  • Even more playgroups!

FUN Playcenter

  • A Friday playgroup in Eureka or more afternoon activities
  • More options for snack, especially for those with allergies
  • More structured circle time, maybe right before snack
  • [The Specialist], when here, 'diagnoses' children + behavior in a negative way. I have a lot of child dev and psych education. Typically her assertions & advice are wrong.
  • Better, healthy snacks
  • More advertising in the community
  • More activities/toys
  • Require proof of vaccines/up to date. I know there are deniers here (for a fact!)
  • Different and more nutritious snacks would be great

Manila FRC

  • More children’s activities like the sleep-over
  • More staff
  • By controlling other kids behavior and stopping negative behavior instead of allowing the child to keep the bad behavior going. Think there needs to be more daycare providers and ones that pay attention and control others behaviors

Mattole Valley FRC

  • Music lessons for kids
  • Classes
  • We could use about 10-15 minutes to have a loosely organized discussion of topics we may be struggling with. And we could sing more

McKinleyville FRC

  • It could be cleaner, new carpet maybe, bugs were on floor
  • You need to replace [staff member]. [Staff member] is disrespectful, condescending, projects wrong motivations into people who don’t deserve it, lacks critical thinking skills, is not caring about children, not sensitive to survivors of D.V.  Also, you need better quality control in food.

McKinleyville Playgroup

  • More art
  • More organized activities for the kids such as storybook time, dancing time, arts and crafts time
  • More art
  • It’s not my place to be so assuming. Perhaps, if I had to comment, less clique-iness, more effort being humble and bringing people together
  • More funding, more time
  • Full time outdoor sandbox
  • Music group, open an hour later
  • Afternoon options would be useful
  • Storytime, crafts
  • Maybe some more guided group games

MOPS

  • Community events listed on page
  • More meetings!
  • Maybe more childcare for new moms that want to join later in the year
  • Can’t think of anything

Nurse Family Partnership

  • More picnics! Or stuff like that
  • None, amazing program
  • Open later to meet after work

Orleans Playgroup

  • More than once a week
  • It could happen more often
  • Hard to say!
  • More outside resources e.g. storyteller, games, art projects
  • More days per week
  • Orleans needs child care for professional working parents who do not qualify for Head Start! I am one of two parents (my wife) who both work professionally 40-45 hours/week
  • I honestly feel that this program is great
  • Outdoor play space
  • Child lock gate for the front door to street

Paso a Paso

  • Todo está bien/Everything is good
  • Me gustaría que hubiera más días para la zumba, unas tres veces por semana/ I would like there would be more zumba days, about three times a week
  • Más participación de la comunidad/More participation from the community
  • Podrían dar clases de baile dos veces a la semana/You could have dancing classes twice a week
  • Más tiempo y más días de zumba/More time and more zumba days
  • Que nos den otros días más de baile-terapia/That you provide more dancing therapy days
  • Me gustaría que la baile-terapia fuera dos veces por semana/I would like the dancing therapy were twice a week
  • Tener más clases para padres en las mañanas/ To have more parenting classes in the mornings
  • Fueran más seguido/They were more often
  • Más horas de baile-terapia y más días/More dancing therapy hours and more days
  • Todo bien/Everything is good
  • En particular a mi se me ha hecho muy bien/Personally I think it is very good

Rio Dell Playgroup

  • I think they’re great
  • Está bien/It’s good
  • Having a playgroup locally means access for me and for the child. Activities foster a “whole” experience, helping to develop a healthy child

Southern Humboldt

  • More playgroups! Redway needs two a week!
  • Longer time period
  • It’s great. Very cozy environment
  • More music, singing
  • Maybe a sign in the school parking lot that says y’all are back here
  • It’s great and appreciated
  • More often!
  • More often
  • Some parents don’t pay attention to their children at playgroups and my kid brings home bad behavior

Tiny Tots Arcata

  • There could be more hands on/sensory play/cognitive development activities
  • N/A

Willow Creek

  • Church is creepy
  • Need better indoor venue. Church is weird
  • More organic fresh fruit, veggies, and snacks available
  • play school at a later time, e.g. 9:30-12:30
  • More food, I guess
  • More events
  • Maybe an extra person to help with all the kids
  • Occasional field trips would be fun and a way to introduce new people/places/things
  • More hours, more helpers, monthly legal/professional help
  • Maybe longer playschool days J

Please add any comments you have about children’s services/materials/activities at the library (2015 comments)
Arcata D Street Playgroup

  • Love it!
  • We go to the library several times a week and look forward to their participation with us
  • I haven’t started taking my daughter to the library yet
  • We haven’t been to the Humboldt County library. We will look into going in the future
  • Need the hours for kids activity times
  • We need more nooks for kids
  • More story times

Blue Lake FRC/Playgroup

  • Great books
  • I haven’t taken my daughter to the library yet
  • No story time in Blue Lake. A reading time would be a great addition to the library. Blue Lake library is awesome!

Discovery Museum

  • We love Baby Read and Grow, Storytime, and we used to love Baby Sign workshops (when she was young)
  • Love the fun reading and crafts programs!
  • Love the library!
  • Some weirdoes smoking outside make [me] not so comfortable going with my young children. Love the shakers and songs. Listens well to stories
  • We have a lot of books at home so we don’t go to the library too often
  • Will start going to Storytime this Friday
  • I don’t disagree completely [re: family friendliness] but we have had problem with homeless people yelling at us and scaring the kids
  • Not saying that the homeless should not be allowed because they do have a right to be there. It’s just not so cool to go to the library, Arcata Plaza, the mall, and various public trails with kids!

FUN Playcenter

  • I love the library services!
  • Love Baby Read and Grow! It’s amazing
  • Wish there were more activities
  • Love them!
  • I feel like my 2-year old loves the story times but she likes to roam around. Because of that, she is too big to be walking over babies during story time and she is disruptive during toddler story time
  • Really value the books on parenting, story time, books, and the toys (doll house) at the library
  • Never been-drugs/homeless
  • We love the library
  • Hours they are open don’t often work with our schedule
  • Family friendly except the neighborhood vagrants/degenerates
  • Many prostitutes/junkies in the area  make it tough to bring kids
  • We LOVE Baby Read and Grow time on Fridays. It is a fabulous, interactive time that my child and I both enjoy!
  • Would like to see more available times for 0-2 activities

Mattole Valley FRC

  • More stuff for bigger kids
  • We are served by the bookmobile and it is so wonderful. Bedtime includes storytime and it is great to have new books to read thanks to the bookmobile!
  • Too far away
  • Would love to have a more frequent bookmobile or story hour
  • I plan on utilizing the bookmobile more often in the months to come

Manila

  • Children’s section of the library is great. The location is one of the reasons we don’t go often. The area isn’t safe
  • The children are very playful and I feel there is not that much of a play area for them and it’s hard to get them to sit and read in a large space
  • Library is full of transients and staff are dismissive of admonishments re: e.g. 290 registrants
  • We love the children’s room

McKinleyville FRC

  • We use the Trinidad branch
  • I wish Baby Read and Grow, besides Eureka’s, were during the week when dad’s are at work and moms are lonely. Weekend classes aren’t good because that’s when you have more things to do. I’d like more classes during the week
  • A lot of shady people outside Eureka library
  • I am blessed to know about this place and think we should advertise more to make bigger parenting groups

McKinleyville Playgroup

  • Only open afternoons-not good for our schedule
  • The library is a hard place to be with a young child (<2) My son likes to pull all the books off shelves
  • I have 3-5 two year olds at a time so the library isn’t an ideal place to bring them
  • We need to make a bigger effort to go to the library as a family
  • I wish there were more storytimes for 0-2 offered

MOPS

  • Scary. The homeless congregating around the library is discouraging
  • There is a really good children’s area but there are homeless/shady people who hang out around the playground outside and in the library on the way to the children’s area
  • We love the children’s library

Nurse Family Partnership

  • We need baby story hours [Hoopa]
  • The hours are so all over the place. Every time I try to go it’s closed!

Orleans Playgroup

  • There is no library in Orleans
  • Bookmobile is awesome!
  • Bookmobile is essential
  • The bookmobile lady is very good, she selects books on the things my kids really like and she makes sure these books come in the bookmobile to Orleans. I appreciate this extra effort
  • We have really enjoyed getting new books to read at the bookmobile. I think it is a fantastic program
  • When we have made it to the library we have loved it. Just don’t make it to the coast that much

Paso a Paso

  • Que hubiera día de cuentos en Fortuna/I wish there would be story days in Fortuna
  • Tiene materiales muy interesantes/It has very interesting material
  • Quisiera advertir más a la comunidad latina, a veces por el español no saben/I wish they would advertise it more to the Latino community, sometimes they [Latino Community] do not know because of the language(barrier)
  • Muy buenos/Very good
  • Todo está bien, es cómodo para todos/Everything is well, it is comfortable for everybody
  • Que a veces no hablan español y es difícil de entender/Sometimes they do not speak Spanish and it is hard to understand
  • No se/I do not know
  • Buenos/Good
  • Desconozco/Unknown
  • Son muy útiles/ They are very useful

Rio Dell Playgroup

More emphasis on good nutrition and reading of book or activity related to the same

Southern Humboldt

  • Good idea to go more
  • More info on libraries
  • Too many scary homeless people outside library because of encampment nearby
  • Garberville library lets us check out kids books as many as we want to
  • Our local library need better story time. Last week [survey dated 10/26/15] there was a great puppet show-need more of that!!
  • Yes, you can find great books on all kinds of kids stuff
  • We love Humboldt libraries-we are lifetime members!
  • The amount of homeless people in Garberville makes me not want to go to the library. We buy a book every time we go to town

Tiny Tots Arcata

  • Love the library
  • I am worried about my children being loud in the library and not understanding that we are borrowing books, not keeping them

Willow Creek

  • We have a nice little library and we love the librarian
  • Great librarian in Willow Creek. Great space
  • Haven’t gone yet. Just moved from a rural area
  • Our local librarian, Elizabeth, is so great with young children, including my son. I feel that she is part of the reason why he gets so excited when I say “we’re going to the library today!” Yay! J
  • Love DVDs, unlimited book checkout
  • We love our librarian. She’s always setting aside books she think my children will like

Comments 2015
Arcata D Street Playgroup

  • It’s a great service. Kids love it
  • Staff is amazing!
  • Would love an afternoon group
  • The playgroup is the highlight of my [child’s] week. I don’t know anyone in the community [as] I am not from here and my partner keeps me very isolated, so it is good for us. If it cost us money, he wouldn’t let me participate so I am very grateful for this opportunity
  • Give us more guidance, organized games, organized games, organized games, organized games
  • We bring the twins Mon Tues Wed. They love the variety of toys, climbers, tricycles, legos, trains, push toys, etc. Nice to have music and instruments. They mimic other kids and are learning to walk. Great place to let them explore and learn
  • More stuff for nursing mom, a music program, more snack options
  • We love D St playgroup! Thank you!
  • Thank you. A great program

  • This would be great 30 min-1 hour later
  • It’s great other than the fact that I am personally aware of some of the attendees who advocate vaccine denial on Facebook who bring their children here occasionally

Mattole Valley FRC

  • Hooray for all the people whose effort makes it possible for us to participate in this great program
  • Very thankful

McKinleyville FRC

  • Love the center and couldn’t do without it
  • Thank you so much for the help!
  • I go hungry at times in order to make sure my kids have enough food to last the rest of the month
  • Not sure at this time. Perhaps after I have utilized a program offered I will have an opinion more specified
  • Kit is a great resource J
  • I was being treated so badly here at one point [by one person] that I had to bring a social worker as a witness, and when I did that the behavior improved by a lot. The first social workers and Americorps workers were great, but they left.
  • Kit’s group has helped me more than I can say. I love it! I am so glad that this program exists. I have no family out here and it has helped fill that void. Thanks for it!

  • My family loves the playgroups and all the ladies that run the McKinleyville group are wonderful!

  • Very supportive staff
  • We LOVE playgroup
  • The scheduled structure of playgroup is great. It might be nice to have some bi-lingual playgroups. It might be nice to incorporate sign language into playgroups

  • This program is amazing! I feel so blessed to be a part of it and HIGHLY recommend it to family and friends. Thank you for all the hard work and support

Orleans Playgroup

  • I am a single working mom and there is no child care in Orleans, We could really use support for a daycare
  • Mehgan is awesome!
  • Thank you!
  • I am so grateful that we have the bookmobile and playgroup. It really enhances the experiences that our kids get to have. Thanks!
  • We love this program!
  • Thank you First 5 for supporting playgroup in Orleans
  • I have to use vacation/leave to cover my child care needs at least 1-2 days per week while working 40 hours/week. This is challenging. I appreciate playgroup, my kids having time with other families. We (me and wife) don’t qualify for Head Start, we make too much /have high income. There is no professional child care service in Orleans/Somes Bar, so I pay $350-$00/week for private child care.  The child care/babysitter watches my kids at my home/property; other parents bring their kids to my home as well. Host in child care at my house is the only way several professional parents can work in our area.
