I.   Welcome

Any member of the Commission who has a conflict of interest with any agenda item is asked at this time to notify the Commission of his or her conflict and affirm that he or she has not discussed the item with any staff or fellow commissioners. Announcing conflicts at this time will help the Chair announce Commissioner recusal for specific agenda items so that it can be noted in the minutes.

IV.   Approval of Minutes: Commission meeting minutes of June 22, 2017.

V. Activity: Mind Jars

Commissioners will engage in an activity illustrating trauma-responsive, developmental principles.

V.   Information Item: Early Brain Development and Resilience Promotion

The Executive Director will present an overview of early brain development, the consequences of early trauma, and the promotion of resilience.

VI. Break Time Certain      10:15-10:30

VII.   Discussion Item: What’s in First 5 Humboldt’s Wheelhouse?

Maria Vanderhorst and Kim Puckett will lead the Commission in a discussion on what is in our “circle” and what is not, what the Commission sees as the priorities for our work, as guided by the current Strategic Plan, and how the Commission can best address these priorities.

VIII. Activity: Building a Box

Commissioners will engage in an activity which illustrates mind-body engagement, a core-principle of trauma-responsive practice (and good early childhood education).

(10 minutes)

IX. Discussion Item: Resilience Game

Commissioners will use the “Resilience Game” from the Harvard Center on the Developing Child to clarify what actions and activities have the most impact on child, family and community resilience.

(15 minutes)

X. Discussion Item: Connecting Funding Decisions to Priorities

Commissioners will discuss the current revenue projections, the consequences of recent cuts, what bottom-line to set for the Sustainability Fund, and how to match funding with priorities for the next several years.

(120 minutes)

XI.  Closing: Fiscal Year 2017-2018

The Commissioners will share one hope for First 5 Humboldt work in the coming year, as well as one thing they hope to contribute to our shared work.
