Hello, my name is Patric Esh. I am the new editor for the First 5 newsletter. Hillarie is moving on, but she has done a wonderful job and I hope I can continue the high standard she has set. I feel transitions can be the logistical nightmare of positive change. Organizing your life when you move, your child starting school/daycare, starting a new job or other big events can be exciting but difficult to handle. That is why support is always important.

As I prepare to send my youngest child to kindergarten and my oldest child across the country to her first year of college, I have a heightened awareness of the transitions that families are going through at playgroups and in our communities. I have noticed that we have new babies joining families (a transition for all involved). I see that families are preparing their toddlers to enter preschool and their preschoolers to enter kindergarten. Then there are the developmental transitions, a baby learns to crawl. The world has now opened up for that person in a whole new way and you discover all of the work that you did safety proofing your home is not quite enough. All of these transitions combine a loss of something old and the excitement of something new, certainly a lot of mixed emotions.
